Peter: Start from, yeah, start from the beginning. A decades-long Manhattan pickup basketball game is on hold because of the pandemic, creating an emotional void for its rotating cast of actors, executives and regular joes. Peter: got to do what youre going to say and say what youre going to do and really be substantial. I can come up with a solution, we can figure it out somehow, some way if youve got the right people around you to do it. Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". Anyone can read what you share. Step one was complete. What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. Now, Ive been extremely lucky. For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. Youre going to have to work your butt off because its work. Thats for every aspect of it. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. How do you create a hermetically sealed bubble for people to compete in on a campus and all the thousands of touch points, people, logistics and everything? Thats just what a joy. Peter Feigin: That this was a year you couldn't even imagine. Peter: We didnt finish the championship till mid-July, which meant like we didnt have long to get the rings included. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. And if youre a fan of the show dont forget to follow to hear new episodes, and Rate or Review us wherever you tune in! How does it really work? And it was a fantasy. Thank you. Because I hadnt worked in, Id worked in New York city. I literally said, "Hey, Giannis, do me a favor. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. Peter Feigin: So, it was kind of crazy. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. Michael Red: So, the Recruiter became the President basically? Peter Feigin: That's right. John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. I always joke that we could run a country, dAmboise said. In September 2013, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced that Bradley Center, the team's home since 1988, was unfit for an NBA team. They have been through a system, if nothing else, highly competitive basketball for the last 12, 14 years, including kind of being shelled up in college, and what the pros are. View career paths Pre-College Business Emerging Leaders (BEL) And that's tough, too. So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think I moved, I graduated from college and had a job, had an opportunity for a job that was kind of nuts. And really build sports entertainment and residential and commercial around it and really have an urban development company that is fueled by the strength of a brand of an NBA team. And maybe 15 years ago, when I was working in Madison Square Garden, my brother was in a parent conference with Mark Lasry and Mark might have mentioned that he wants to look at some teams. Everybody knows everybody. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. How did that come together? How could we reduce our costs immediately knowing that we weren't operating? I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. Again, under the umbrella of collecting people and really having experience in a big way. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions. But no matter how skilled the player, new members are included on a probationary basis. These guys are human beings. Michael Red: Is there a pivotal moment that you can think of, even as a teenager or as a young kid, that you'd bet on yourself in a major, major way? Talk about that process. Its all about your partner, it was one of these opportunities where she was just all in and to her benefit, like I owe her forever because it was, like its been an unbelievable, run and a huge opportunity. We want to win. How does that, and then, with that also because this harkens back, Im old enough, youre old enough even, we remember the Michael Jordan era, he was the greatest player in the world back in his Again, you not only have one of the greatest players ever to play on the planet, but youve also created this culture of retention. We had a ceremony and we had, and out of all the things in the experience, like I want to be in a parade every day. John: No question. Peter Feigin: And I think I kind of have this delusion that there's nothing that I can be a part of, that we can't accomplish. Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. Let that person speak. I also listen, I thought, and my parents thought both my brother and I were as you can imagine before ADD was actually diagnosed, Peter: for kids our age and stuff, because its still be on impulsive, relentless, like, [inaudible]. John: Yeah. We've made it really authentic and localized with what our food and beverage offerings are going to be. Even though we just opened up a building two years ago, you're starting in a place where we're going to have some attrition and lose some fans and have to build equity back up and get back to basics of like building ticket sales, building everything else. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." Michael Red: It's becoming that and has become that. In business it takes a real challenging of like where your growth is going to come from I in a big way. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. Peter Feigin: So, that was and sort of weird comfort in that everybody in the world was going through it.
